The World Heritage Centre, established in 1992 by UNESCO, serves as Secretariat of the World Heritage Committee appointed by the Director-General of UNESCO. The Director-General designated the Director of the World Heritage Centre as Secretary to the Committee.

The Centre organizes the annual sessions of the World Heritage Committee and its Bureau, meetings of the General Assembly, is responsible for the implementation of decisions of the World Heritage Committee and resolutions of the General Assembly, provides advice to States Parties in the preparation of site nominations and coordinates the reporting on the condition of sites.

The Centre collaborates with the Advisory Bodies and works in close co-operation with other sectors and field offices of UNESCO.
